Concerns & Rants

I have some concerns about the future of this country.

There seems to be "elements" within our society...and within our government...that apparently feel that nothing is worth fighting for.... not even the safety, security or future of the people of this country.

It appears that these "elements" also have very short memories. September 11, 2001, is still a very vivid memory to me. I'm still pissed about it and I will NOT forget about it!

Do these "elements" not realize that we lost more people on 9-11 than we did in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor or the D-Day invasion? And the people we lost on 9-11 were innocent civilians...not military personnel!

Our President said shortly after 9-11 that this war on terrorism will last for many years. This is not the type of war where you meet your enemy on the battlefield and winner take all. Terrorists are embedded in every society on this old blue planet. It will take many years to track them down.

Every once in a while, I hear someone say that Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. Now, how in the hell would we know that? There is not an intelligence agency in the world that would guarantee that! Some people just have a political need to announce their own beliefs or suspicions as fact.

To me...it makes absolutely no difference to me if Iraq had anything to do with 9-11 or not. Removing that despot from the world scene was the best thing this country has done in many years.

Some of you may reply that the President lied to us about Iraq's possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs). To this I reply, "Bullsh*t". It's a matter of historical fact that Iraq used chemical and biological weapons in it's 1980s war against Iran...there was graphic news coverage of the effects, for God's sake. Iraq also used chemical weapons against it's own Kurdish citizens...more graphic news coverage.

We should be more concerned about the location of the WMDs...not if they existed or not. Personally, I suspect that the countries that provided WMDs to Iraq in the first place were instrumental in getting the WMDs out of the country prior to the invasion...lest they be implicated if US forces found the WMDs.

Putting WMDs aside, what are other reasons for invading Iraq? Let's see...hmmmm...how about the fact the Iraq has been providing safe harbor to terrorists for years (more news reports)....Iraq has threatened and invaded neighboring countries....Iraq launched missiles at Israel...? Personally, all of this is enough justification for me.

This is going to sound very caustic....but I'm kind of glad that we are in Iraq right now. This battleground against terrorism is "there"....not "here". Yes, we've lost about 2500 heroes in Iraq over the last 3+ years since the invasion and each of those deaths is tragic...but let's get some perspective here. There were battles in World War II where we lost 2500 heroes in ONE day!

Just so you know...my youngest son is a member of the US Army Reserves. He spent some time in Iraq and just returned from a year in Afghanistan. I have a nephew who spent a year in Iraq. After a year at home, this same nephew just started a 12-month deployment to Afghanistan. I have another nephew (brother of the first) who will also be deployed soon.

If you want to hear the real story of how our efforts are appreciated by the citizenry of Iraq and Afghanistan...go talk to a soldier who has been deployed. Most of the time, your eyes will be opened and you will hear stories of appreciation that "somehow" never make it into the news.

I'm sick and tired of the efforts of these "elements" within our society and government that try to politicize the war on terror. They just can't stand the fact that they are not in power during this critical time of history. I suspect that the underlying cause of their feelings is shear and utter jealousy. If you bothered to check voting records of some of these elected "elements", you'd find that most of them voted to invade Iraq. That is a another fact that is also "somehow" neglected in the news.

Yesterday...July 4...North Korea tested some missiles. The media is in an uproar about the possible threat of a nuclear strike against the US by North Korea.

If North Korea does develop nuclear weapons, who can we blame? Well, I have a suggestion. Since you are reading this, you are apparently computer literate. Why don't you do a little Internet research regarding North Korea, the US and nuclear technology? Oh, you might also add the year of 1994 to your search.

Hmmm....who was the President in 1994? Yep, the Clinton Administration authorized the sale of nuclear reactors to North Korea in return for a promise....yes, a promise...that North Korea would not develop nuclear weapons. It's amazing how naive and stupid some elected officials can be.

Sorry, I know I'm ranting, but I have to give one more opinion. As a nation, we are becoming a spoiled people. It's becoming more apparent that we may not be willing to sacrifice anything for the greater good. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see much of the intestinal fortitude that our parents and grandparents showed during World War II with the rationing of gas, food, rubber, etc. We also need to rid ourselves of the attitudes of "entitlement", "instant gratification" and "political correctness" if we are going to survive as a nation.

Unfortunately, I suspect that it's going to take another 9-11 to wake some people up. God forbid if the "elements" return to power in this country.... I believe that would just invite another 9-11.

I have some concerns about the future of this country.
